Musings on Storm Shadow

 There are so many plot holes questions!

1) No way Zartan walked around in old man make-up for ten years or so to raise Storm Shadow after he manipulated the Arashikage clan into turning against him. And he definitely wasn’t the one to complete Storm’s martial arts training. 

Thus I figure Zartan (or maybe McCullen; it would at least explain Storm being loyal-ish to him) was able to somehow arrange for Storm Shadow to be trained by others. Passed from hand to hand like a borrowed sword. (And at least one of his teachers had to be badass granny from that mountain monastery!) Lots of opportunities there to make him less of a complete sociopath. (But also mess him up more in other ways. Because I gotta!) 

That outside influence would probably why Storm and Zartan don’t get along at all - Storm is largely amoral, but has enough sense of personal honor that he has lines he won’t cross. Zartan is just a clever sadist out for kicks.

2) Why Storm Shadow? Why was he so special? I mean, the kid was a martial arts prodigy, but that’s still a lot of trouble to go through just to get one fighter who’s going to take another decade to come into his full potential. I might have to take a page from the comics on this one and delve into Arashikage’s founding. Originally the clan was supposed to be guarding a powerful ki-channeling gem, so maybe something along those lines - some treasure that requires someone with Arashikage blood to either get into the vault or operate it at all. And that someone also needs to be a hella skilled fighter to survive all of the security around said vault.

I suspect many Red Ninjas will have died trying to get at it by the time Storm comes back into the picture.
